Dream Act Poster Project

Introduction:
This project was intended to in some way get a point across, while using a portrait of someone without it being negative or derogatory to the opposing side.  For this project we were given the category of the Dream Act.  The Dream Act is a peace of legislature that has been proposed to Congress to give illegal immigrants in the United States a free pass and to give them access to things that citizens have the right to while also shortening the length of time it takes to become a citizen.

Sketches:
Here were some of the original roughs that we were throwing around and seeing what ones had a future and which ones were trash.
Roughs / Drafts:
Here for the drafts I started one and quickly became hooked on the idea of having a sullen looking victim look beat down and sullen.  With it being clearly shown that as the result of the absence of the Dream Act that is happening.  I was so enthused with this idea that I decided this was the one.  I quickly went to photoshop and began creating.  30 minutes later I realized I had a pile of trash. Because I skipped doing any other drafts I had to visualize exactly what I wanted and how I wanted it done.  This made the design process take many, many more hours to create something that even resembled good. I am sorry for not following through your methods Mr. Davis!  I thought that one idea was good enough.  Man, did I pay for that, boy oh boy the time sent into that abyss....

Because of my sad mistake, I combined both my drafts and my roughs together and this was the product.
Inspiration:
These three pictures were the main source of inspiration for the poster.  The first one originally gave me the idea of having images on top of each other with the background showing through the top image.  This then led to the second image where the data and numbers were a great way to have the visual representation of people being seen in a different light.  Finally the last one is where I got the quote from for the poster and what shaped the idea of having a poster focused around visualizing people as data and numbers.
Final Design:
To whomever this may concern:

This project was in the beginning very unprofessionally done, with many novice or junior mistakes made that most fourth graders would not make.  An example of this is, we originally only had one idea to start with and we pursued the idea to ridiculous levels and didn't kill it early.  This caused us to waste huge amounts of time on an idea that was already terrible to begin with.  This being said, it is not how you act when everything is working perfectly that demonstrates character, it is how you recover from any mistakes that you make that is truly the test.  And in this way I firmly believe we performed splendidly. Even with this realization quite late into the design process, we decided to buckle down and fix this.  We put in extra time outside of class, and even learned multitudes of new features that we never even knew existed in Photoshop to create a poster we could be proud of.  And this is what we made.  The poster is suppose to allude to the fact that during talks about immigration huge numbers are thrown around, like 250,000 people will leave their homes.  With such large numbers the human brain is physically incapable of understanding it and gives up.  This poster was meant to remind you that each individual number is a person, just like you with hopes, dreams and emotions.  Then the font choices.  The first one for the title was borrowed from a class mate and was a good title type font.  But here is where it becomes interesting.  The People font is suppose to be smooth and cursive with no sharp edges just as people are, with their emotions and feelings.  Then the Not Numbers, is in digital font, meaning to demonstrate the starch contrast between these two fundamentally different concepts.  numbers vs living breathing humans.
